Mitral and aortic regurgitation in 84 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses

1995

In echocardiographic and necropsy studies nodular thickening of the mitral valve and, less frequently, of the aortic valve has been found in 60%-90% of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Little is known about the haemodynamic consequences of these morphological changes. In this study 84 unselected patients with different enzymatically proven MPS and 84 age and sex matched, healthy persons were studied prospectively by colour Doppler flow mapping. The patients' age ranged from 1 to 47 years (median 8.1 years). Mitral and aortic regurgitation were defined as a holosystolic or holodiastolic jet originating from the valve into the left atrium or the left ventricular outflow tract, respe…

Do asthmatic smokers benefit as much as non-smokers on budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy? Results of an open label study

2012

SummaryBackgroundStudies with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in smoking asthmatics have mostly shown poorer treatment responses than in non-smoking asthmatics.MethodsEuroSMART, an open, randomised, 6-month study, compared budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort ® Turbuhaler®)hhNeither the Symbicort SMART posology nor the dry powder formulation, Turbuhaler, is currently approved in the US. maintenance and reliever therapy (Symbicort SMART®) at two maintenance doses of budesonide/formoterol (160/4.5 μg), 1 × 2 and 2 × 2, in patients with asthma who were symptomatic despite treatment with ICS ± long-acting β2-agonists. Evaluation of DNA ploidy and degree of DNA abnormality in benign and malignant melanocytic lesions of the skin using video imaging.

2000

BACKGROUND Making a morphologic distinction between benign and malignant melanocytic tumors of the skin is frequently difficult, especially because “gray zones” between these lesions often exist. DNA image cytometry as an adjuvant method for the diagnosis and prognostic prediction of premalignant lesions and malignant tumors of many other organs is already well established. The aim of this study was to determine whether DNA image cytometry is helpful in distinguishing benign from malignant melanocytic lesions and whether cytometry would give valid information with which to predict the prognoses associated with malignant melanomas. METHODS DNA image cytometry was performed on 127 benign and …

Primary cutaneous melanoma in hidden sites is associated with thicker tumours — a study of 829 patients

2001

The aim of this study was to determine if primary cutaneous melanomas in hidden anatomical sites were associated with thicker tumours. Retrospective medical data of 829 patients with melanomas diagnosed at our centre between January 1976 and July 1998 were recorded from our database. Three groups were defined according to the anatomical site of the primary melanoma: (1) visible areas (group 1: 493 patients); (2) visible areas only to the patients or to their partners in privacy (group 2: 281 patients); and (3) hidden areas (group 3: 55 patients). Univariate analysis indicated that patients with melanoma in hidden regions presented significantly thicker tumours (median for group 3: 2.25 vers…

Management of venous thromboembolism in patients with acute leukemia at high bleeding risk: a multi-center study

2016

In the last decades, evaluation of clinically relevant thrombotic complications in patients with acute leukemia (AL) has been poorly investigated. The authors performed a multi-center study to evaluate the management of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adult patients with AL. The intention was to find as clinically relevant the following: symptomatic Venous Thrombosis (VT) occurred in typical (lower limbs) and atypical (cerebral, upper limbs, abdominal, etc) sites with or without pulmonary embolism (PE). Over a population of 1461 patients with AL, 22 cases of symptomatic VTE were recorded in hospitalized patients with a mean age of 54.6 years. The absolute incidence of VTE was 1.…

Volume flow in the common carotid artery does not decrease postprandially.

2003

Background and Purpose. A commonplace explanation for postprandial fatigue is the assumption of the redistribution of perfusion from the cerebral to the mesenterial territory. However, this assumption has never been scientifically proven. Methods. Because approximately 70% of the blood flow in the common carotid artery (CCA) is directed to the internal carotid artery, this vessel can be seen as a major brain-supplying artery. Flow volume in the CCA can be measured by color M-mode duplex sonography. The authors investigated the flow volume rate in 20 healthy volunteers before and after the intake of a high-energy meal. Heart rate, blood pressure, and expiratory CO2 were also measured at both…

Transitional hemodynamics in infants of diabetic mothers by targeted neonatal echocardiography, electrocardiography and peripheral flow study

2017

Objective: Metabolic alterations of intrauterine environment in diabetes mellitus (DM) lead to fetal cardiac dysfunctions that can persist after birth. The aim of the study was to assess the cardiovascular adaptation in infants born to diabetic mothers (IDM) with different degrees of glycometabolic control, in relation to revised guidelines for diagnosis of DM and quality improvements in neonatal care. Materials and methods: An observational case-control study was conducted on IDM with gestational, type 1 and type 2 DM. Relevant maternal and neonatal anamnestic, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed. Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic analyses, including structural and systo-…

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound study of the effects of nitrous oxide on cerebral autoregulation during neurosurgical anesthesia: a randomized contro…

2003

Object. Nitrous oxide has an adverse effect on cerebrovascular hemodynamics. Increased intracranial pressure, cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral metabolic rate of O2 (CMRO2), and reduced autoregulation indices have been reported, but their magnitudes are still being debated. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of N2O on CBF and autoregulatory indexes during N2O—sevoflurane anesthesia in a prospective randomized controlled series of patients. Methods. Two groups of 20 patients were studied on the basis of the use of N2O in the anesthetic gas mixture. The transient hyperemic response test, which relies on transcranial Doppler ultrasound techniques, was used to assess cerebral hemo…

Color-coded duplex ultrasonography of the origin of the vertebral artery: normal values of flow velocities.

2000

The introduction of color-coded duplex ultrasonography has improved the ease of performing ultrasound investigations of the vertebral arteries. So far, normal values of flow velocities have been reported only for the intertransverse region of the vertebral artery (V2 segments). Atherosclerotic disease at the origin of the vertebral arteries (V0 segment) is frequent and is one of the risk factors for vertebrobasilar ischemic disease. Normal values of flow velocities of the vertebral artery origin are needed to assess pathologic findings, such as vertebral artery origin stenosis or dissection. The aim of this study was to describe the normal flow velocities of vertebral artery origin (V0 segm…

Evaluation of regional haemodynamics and alterations of vascular wall of the lower limbs in hypertensive subjects

1995

This study was designed to analyse the relationship between arterial hypertension and changes in arterial blood flow and vascular wall damage of the lower limbs in hypertensive patients with various degrees of hypertension. Six hundred and fifty-four hypertensive patients (421 males and 233 females) aged 35 to 70 years and 88 healthy subjects (63 males and 25 females) aged 39 to 60 years were studied. Strain-gauge plethysmography of the lower limbs was used to calculate arterial calf blood flow (RF), arterial calf blood flow after post-ischaemic hyperaemia (PF), basal and minimal vascular resistances (BVR and MVR), time to reach peak flow (tPF), time until 50% reduction of peak flow (tT1/2)…
